Quick development update… AppleScript extensions are now working wonderfully for the next release. The advantage of using AppleScript directly rather than through the shell integration is that you don’t get any character escaping problems. This means that the full plug-in syntax works great for scripts like the Things.app one above.
It also makes it significantly easier to add AppleScript extensions directly to Alfred without needing to fiddle with bash / shell.
The ‘background’ option allows scripts to be run inline (blocking Alfred but allowing AppleScript dialogs) or background using osascript :)
on alfred_script(q)
  tell application "Things"
    parse quicksilver input q
  end tell
end alfred_script

  5. Jiggly Fat

Someone on LoseIt.com’s forum recently asked the follow question:

Okay so i have been working out and i just recently got back to doing lose it as a serious partner to my work outs. Step aerobics. But lately I have noticed my body fat is turning into a jello form. (if that makes since) Like you know how before your fat is pretty solid, but now its ummm mushy?

    what exactly is that?

    And here was my reply:

It’s funny you mention that because “fat” is kind of like Jello in a way. Jello is not a solid or a liquid but it’s actually *both*. Basically, when gelatin & a liquid are heated then cooled, the gelatin ends up forming many tiny chambers in which the liquid gets trapped and stays suspended. Fat is sort of the same thing.

As I understand it, body fat is a combination of glycerol and fatty acids (these would be like the liquid in Jello). The fatty acids/glycerol are stored into adipose tissue (the body’s natural fat cells), which is comparable to gelatin in this analogy.

When the body runs out of carbs to burn for energy, it resorts to using the fatty acids/glycerol that is had stored in your fat cells. As those are burned away, the cells become less taught and more jiggly/can more around more freely.. kind of like emptying water from a water bed or a water balloon… God I love analogies!

Anyway, that’s my understanding of fat. It also has to do with how healthy your skin is, how much your skin has been stretched from your past weight gain, and a number of other things too.

I hope all this makes sense!

  8. At-home Exercise: The Shovelglove

While I like the idea of body building, I don’t care about being able to dead lift 20 tonnes or squat an african elephant.. mostly because it really doesn’t have any real-world application.

On the other hand, I do like the idea of a “hard day’s work” workout.. unfortunately, that’s a little difficult to get in the city.

Enter the Shovelglove! A sledge hammer for shoveling / hammer workouts.

    To quote the site:

Take a sledgehammer and wrap an old sweater around it. This is your “shovelglove.” Every week day morning, set a timer for 14 minutes. Use the shovelglove to perform shoveling, butter churning, and wood chopping motions until the timer goes off. Stop. Rest on weekends and holidays.

Hell yeah, I’m in! Guess I’m making a trip to Canadian Tire this weekend!

  9. New Favorite Smoothie: Peanut Butter Strawberry Banana

I just whipped up a delicious new (to me) smoothie that I can’t believe I didn’t think of before!

    Peanut Butter Strawberry Banana Smoothie

    • 1 cup Dole Strawberry Banana Fruit Mix
    • 8 oz Vanilla Almond Milk (unsweetened)
    • 2 tbsp Organic Peanut Butter

Throw it all in a blender and BAM! You’ll have a delicious and nutritious frozen smoothie that tastes like peanut butter ice cream!

    Total Calories: 330
